Thoughts on Baseball
With George Mitchell's report out about steroid use in baseball (like we didn't already know...), the airwaves are full of various reactions. Yesterday I heard several "people on the street" clips, and most of them fell along the lines of "these guys cheated, their records shouldn't count, they shouldn't be let in the Hall of Fame." While I agree with the sentiments expressed, I just felt it needed mentioning that people like Barry Bonds didn't hit all those home runs just because of steroids. These players had talent, no question. The assumption that any player in any sport who starts using performance enhancing substances will suddenly be able to hit, throw, run etc. is fallacious. The drugs may help them hit or throw further, but won't do jack for their ability to actually hit it in the first place or throw it with accuracy. Anyway, even if they leave Bonds' record on the books, it will continue to be tarnished. Picture an asterisk beside his record, and at the bottom of the page it says "record set during a period when steroids were in widespread use."
We all know Hank Aaron is still the man, because Barry fucked up and made the wrong decision, probably encouraged to do so by team management and owners looking for profits.
