New Song

This weekend I finished writing a song that I started months ago. Sometimes I get a verse or two and then they sit for ages. I wrote this on ukulele.

Ant Man's Blues
Please watch your step; it could be me
under your instep
a minor tragedy
On that note, a blue note, the end of me

I'm no one's hero; how could I be?
Heroic stature has been denied to me
On that note, a blue note, I'm history

Everyone knows about the big men
with their influence and cars;
a catchy turn of phrase
and the world lays down and whispers
"take it all"

I'll get no bigger; I'll probably get more small
no call-backs, no encores, I'm infinitesimal
On that note, a blue note, nothing at all

A minor change of formula
a minor change of suit and name
could have made a giant of me
would have screamed to the world
"Look at me!"

So watch your step today, the ant-man cometh any day
and you may not ever know how close your brush with fame
On that note, a blue note, another day

Shots from King's Island

I'm back from vacation. We went to King's Island on Monday and Tuesday. Mia had her adenoids and tonsils out on Wednesday, and we had a movie night in the yard on Saturday. It was a good week. Mia is recovering quickly; if you saw her the day after the surgery, you wouldn't have guessed it had ever happened. Some of these shots from King's Island were taken on the ride called "the Zephyr." I didn't know at the time I was breaking the rules by having my camera out while on the ride. Mia loved this ride.

Supper Blog #1

I'm going to begin posting an occasional "supper blog." I love to cook, and I cook almost every evening. Thursday evening I was preparing Mojo marinated pork tenderloin and started taking pictures as I worked. This is a Cuban-American recipe out of a grilling cookbook. The marinade was lime juice, orange juice, olive oil and garlic slices; I made some green beans with lime, olive oil and sea salt; and some grilled corn and onions. If anyone wants the recipe, let me know.

Toad-ally Cool

Sorry for the bad title (it's a "pune, or a play on words," as Terry Pratchett would say). Audrey was out in the rain last night and caught 2 toads. The lighter colored one was smaller; a juvenile, I guess, and the bigger, darker one made cool chirping noises. No toads were harmed during the making of this post.

Graduation! (5th grade)

Audrey's 5th grade graduation was last week. While she looked horribly uncomfortable to be in front of a crowd, she looked much happier afterwards. She received an award for her artwork, for volunteer work with the kindergarten classes, and she received a President's gold award for educational excellence. I'm so proud of her!
